3D Murals

A 3D mural is a large-scale wall (or wall-and-floor) painting that uses anamorphosis to create the illusion of real depth on a flat surface. As a 3D mural artist, Chris Carlson builds immersive, photo-ready installations for museums, brands, dealerships, and events. Tap any image to view it full screen.

The craft

How 3D murals work

A 3D mural is a large-scale painting created directly on walls, floors, or movable materials like vinyl. Like 3D chalk art, it relies on anamorphosis: a form of perspective that lets an artist create the illusion of real depth on a flat surface.

The most immersive 3D murals combine the wall and the floor, so a scene appears to open into the room or drop away beneath your feet. Because each piece is designed around a single viewing point, it turns a flat surface into a space people can seemingly step into, which makes it ideal for interactive photos.

Murals are usually painted in durable materials, so they last far longer than temporary chalk. That permanence suits museums, dealerships, offices, and brand spaces that want a lasting attraction, while movable vinyl panels make a mural portable for traveling installations and events.

A lasting form of anamorphic art

Anamorphic illusions have been used by artists since the Renaissance, and the modern street and mural versions grew out of that same tradition of bending perspective to fool the eye. I have spent more than 13 years creating 3D murals for clients across the country, from museum installations to corporate events.

Curious how these illusions come together? See the ground-based work on my 3D chalk art page, watch a few time-lapse videos, or read more about what makes a great 3D mural.
