Easy Sidewalk Chalk Art Ideas
1. Animals
Animals are one of the best subjects for chalk art. We see them everywhere and they come in all shapes and sizes. Many of us even have animals living in our houses! Here are some of the best animals for chalk drawings:
- Dogs

Dogs can be a great inspiration for artwork. They have so many different appearances and expressions that the possibilities are endless! I recommend using a cartoon style for a cute and fun drawing. Or if you’re a more experienced artist you can use a realistic style for a more refined drawing.
Here is my favorite chalk drawing of a dog that I have ever done:
I made this drawing at the 2018 Denver Chalk Art Festival. It was inspired by my English Bulldog crossed with a dinosaur.
- Cats

Cats can be a perfect choice for your next chalk drawing. Their large eyes convey so much emotion! I recommend getting creative with your color choices when drawing cats. Instead of tan and brown you can use purple and orange to create your colorful cat. Don’t be afraid to experiment!
Here is my favorite chalk drawing of a cat that I have done:
This piece was inspired by my cat, Ralph. He always gets a wild look in his eyes when I turn on the lava lamp.
- Birds

Birds are a great subject for chalk art because of their simple forms and colorful feathers. You can use basically any color when drawing birds! Their feathers can be a great example of iridescent colors. This means that the feathers appear to gradually change color depending on how you look at them.
Here is my favorite chalk drawing of a bird that I have ever done:
I gave the bird metal wings and rocket boosters, but it’s still a bird!
2. Vehicles

Vehicles like cars, trucks, and trains are a big part of our everyday lives. It’s only natural that we would want to draw them. There is a huge variety of shapes, sizes and colors found in vehicles, so you can get creative with your drawings! I recommend drawing white lines coming off the back of your vehicle to show direction and speed. You can also use your fingers to blur the back half of a vehicle to make it look extra fast!
3. Flowers

Flowers can be one of the most fun things to draw with chalk. The color possibilities are endless! You can invent your own flower or try to draw one that really exists. I recommend using multiple colors to create your flowers. So instead of just drawing a yellow flower, add more orange to the ends of the petals. You can blend the colors together using your fingers to create a gradient. This will make your drawing look extra vibrant!
4. Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs are perfect for chalk art because they can be any color you want. You can go with a traditional green dino, or get creative with a purple and pink version! I recommend using the dinosaur’s mouth and eyes to convey emotion. Big round eyes and a smiling mouth will make your dino look happy and friendly. While squinted eyes and a snarling mouth will make your creature look scary.
5. Interactive Designs
Interactive designs can be some of the most fun things to create with chalk. These are designs that you can pose with and it looks like you are interacting with the artwork! Once you start interacting with your artwork you will notice the creative floodgates open and new ideas start pouring out!
- Wings

Wings are a really fun and easy interactive chalk art design. You can make butterfly wings, dragon wings, angel wings. Even invent your own custom wings! Just leave a small space in between the two wings for a person to pose. When you are finished drawing, have someone lay down in between the two wings. Then take a photo standing above them. Now they have wings!
- Balloons

Balloons are one of the simplest things you can draw with chalk. They have a very easy shape and come in all kinds of bright colors. I recommend drawing a bright white highlight near the top of the balloon. This will make it look like the sun is reflecting off the material. Then draw strings hanging down below the balloons. When someone lays on the ground and pretends to hold the strings it will look like they are floating! Take a photo from directly above the artwork to get the best effect.
- Comic Book Speech Bubble

The comic book speech bubble is the quickest and easiest idea on this list. You can draw out the bubble in seconds and then have a blast thinking of things to write inside. Just have someone lay down next to the bubble and it looks like they are in a comic book!
Now that you have some inspiration it’s time to get out there and make some chalk art!
Remember that chalk art is supposed to be fun, so don’t put any pressure on yourself. Just draw things that make you feel happy or excited. Experiment with new techniques and materials. Be silly! Most importantly, connect with friends and family while having fun and making art!
